Making Judgments

It seems to be part of our nature that we make judgments. We do it unconsciously and all of the time.

From our very first few thoughts we are trying to make sense of the world around us. Our brain has a compulsion to understand everything that we see, hear, feel, smell or taste. This, of course, is how we learn.

One of the challenges facing an Executive or Life Coach is being able to be totally impartial and non-judgmental. This is also something that is very useful in all walks of life and can often make the difference between greatness and normality.

When someone or something presents you with a situation that defies some of your core beliefs, this is a near impossible task. Your brain must support your beliefs, that is its job, hence you are likely to react with a strong emotional response.

One of the most effective ways to remain in a place of non-judgment, is to simply remember that this person or situation is not part of your experience. It certainly is not in your realm of responsibiliy.

You can, of course, try to change them or the situation, but how likely is that? From the point of view of a coach, this is overstepping your role and responsibility, and it undermines your ability to facilitate change.

So when someone does or says somehing that you choose to react to with judgment, remember that this person is creating their experience, just as you are creating yours, and has chosen their own actions. If you can offer them support with this understanding, you are well placed to help them to help themselves.

Maintaining a Positive Outlook

One of the hardest things to do is to maintain your positivity. Certain situations, events and even people can interfere with even the most positive people.

The challenge is to find something about a situation, or person, that you can be positive about. One trick is to find something that you like about it or them and then to focus only on that, if other thoughts enter your mind then simply let them go and re-focus on the positive ones.

Now obviously at times this is extremely difficult and if particular circumstances are emotionally challenging then this can seem an impossible task. Often in this situation you simply have to dig deep and find something you can be grateful or positive about.

Sometimes it is only possible after the event, or at a time when your emotions are less intense, in which case you can find the positive things at the time you feel ready and then focus only on them when you remember the situation.

As you practice positive thinking and always looking for a positive in every situation and in every encounter, it becomes much easier. You will find positives even in the most difficult of situations, which you will find will help you through the tough times.

Right or Wrong, Making Difficult Decisions

We are all, at some point in our lives, faced with making difficult decisions. These can come about as a direct result or consequence of your thoughts or actions, or occasionally as a result of something outside of your control or responsibility.

At these times, it is important to remember that there are no right or wrong decisions - the right or wrong is yours to decide for yourself. It is how you feel about it that really matters. We are all making decisions all of the time, most are sub-conscious, the measure of difficulty we experience is really the strength of feeling you have about it.

Often people consider the reactions and opinions of those around them and while this can be helpful, at times it presents challenges and obstacles to the decision making process. Remember in this situation that the only thing that really matters is how you feel about the decision.

If it helps, you can project into the future and consider how a future you will feel about your decision at that time. Try to imagine yourself at that point in time having made the choice and write down how you are feeling. You can write a letter to your present self outlining how life is now and what your feelings, thoughts and experience is at this new time.

Once you have done this, then consider the other options you have and project into the future having made those choices. Again if appropriate you can write a letter to your present self.

Once the decision is made and executed, your responsibility for the choice is over. Now your responsibility for your reaction to your choice has begun, so make the decision and move on with your life. Treat your decision with respect and take charge of your future.

What Can I Do Differently?

This is inspired from one of our thoughts of the day posted at the new Aquarius Coaching Forum in which readers are invited to consider the thought or idea for that day. This particular one, What Can I Do Differently Today, has got me thinking.

Before I get onto that, a bit of a plug: I’ve just listed this blog at LS Blogs and thought it’s worth a mention - I’ve listed them also in the Blog Directories Links. It’s a great place to get your own blog listed and many of the categories have a high page rank too which is uncommon for a free directory service like this.

There are many applications for this thought, “what can I do differently?”. Firstly, in the morning you can consider what you have to do that day and the things you normally do on a daily basis, and ask the question what can I do differently or what improvements can I make? For example, you probably say good morning to a few people, if you work in an office. So what can you do differently? Can you perhaps spend a few minutes talking with them, asking them how they are, being interested in them? Maybe you already do, so what improvements can you make to the relationship, etc.

This giving thought to the things that you do can have incredible benefits. In my example, people will begin to respond more warmly to you in your interactions with them and if you are in a management position, it may help productivity and communication.

Other applications for this idea can come about as you go about your life, giving thought to your thoughts, words and actions as you interact with the world and others around you. Remember that today is the only shot you get at this day, so thinking about things like this can help you get the most from it.

I’d love to hear some feedback on what you’ve done differently today, post any comments by clicking the comments link below.
