Your circumstances are your blessing or your curse

May 9th, 2008 | By Dan O'Neil | Category: Uncategorized

The people I encounter in my coaching work never cease to amaze and astound me. The most common theme amongst people who make something of their lives (by their own definition of course) is that they always use their circumstances to their advantage. Be it ill-health, lack of money, lack of education or skill, whatever their circumstances they do what they want to do anyway; nothing stands in their way.

I’ve certainly met plenty of people who are the opposite – in my network marketing days I encountered so many people for whom their circumstances were the reason they chose not to succeed. Ultimately it all boils down to one thing… EXCUSES!

Life is littered with examples of people who have made fortunes and built incredible companies, organisations and charities in spite of their circumstances and upbringing. To them, it is just a part of life, something to be celebrated and used to motivate them towards their own greatness.

Today, I’d like to ask you which of your circumstances is your excuse for not moving toward your goals and dreams? Ultimately it doesn’t matter what your excuse is – it will prevent you from achieving what you set out to do.

Start by celebrating your circumstances – after all you would not be you today without them!

I agree with you Dan, you can have an amazing life when you see that your circumstances are ALWAYS your blessing. Even if it is something others would consider really bad, there is always something great to learn or get out of it.

So personally I try not to make excuses in terms of life success and growth, I feel like I am exactly where I want to be and moving in the exact direction I want. Now my only weakness is making excuses for not excercising enough, especially knowing what I know and how good it is for a person – shame on me…. ;)

Some people just lack motivation, I’m not sure if that qualifies as a circumstance or excuse. It’s really easy to say you’re going to do something, but taking the steps and action to actually do it are entirely different things.

@MVaughn Thanks for commenting. I’d be inclined to agree with you! Motivation is so much easier when you work out what you actually want and understand the reasons for taking the actions that will get you there. When it stops feeling like work, motivation is never a problem! Cheers, Dan.

Excuses can be given when it is in right way, when it doesnt affect one’s life that is very important. But motivating the people who have fallen in drugs and alcohol is really very tough job to overcome them. But these difficult task was also done by drug rehabilitation center. In this site synergytreatment.com they have given detail motivation for those people who were undertaken by drugs and alcohols.

Thanks Sophia I agree that motivating people to overcome things like drugs and alcohol is tough. Clearly my post isn’t directed at such problems, although there may be some truth in it for some people. Kind regards, Dan.

  7. Hi Dan,

I love your site, so much information to see and learn from. I am a person who sees the cup half full opposed to half empty and prefer to see my circumstances as a blessing. Why worry, there is too much negative in the world anyway.

Let us be happy and merry where we can.

Dan O’Neil says… Hi Susan, Thanks for your kind words – normally I’d remove a link if a comment doesn’t add value to the post, but I really like your statement “Why worry, there is too much negative in the world anyway.”

I totally agree – it all boils down to taking responsibility for your own life. So many people, particularly here in the UK seem to feel that they are entitled to happiness and success, and that it must be someone else’s fault if they’re not experiencing it.
