Thoughts on Change and Growth

Jul 21st, 2008 | By Dan O'Neil | Category: Personal Development, self-improvement

We live in a world where we expect everything now and while this can be useful, it can seriously get in the way of our growth and personal development. Change is something that takes time… sometimes it’s a life’s work. It can’t be hurried and you can’t make it happen before you are ready for it.

You can go on courses and workshops, read books, listen to audio or watch video and all this will leave you feeling profoundly different. The bottom line is that no one can force you or make you change your life. You have to be willing, be prepared to put in time and effort, and give yourself the time and space to make mistakes. Otherwise all the learning, courses, books and audio/video are a waste.

I learned several years ago that in order to successfully help people turn their lives around and achieve their goals, there has to be a strong desire and commitment to the process of change. Sometimes it can be a rough ride… stamina is a useful thing to have.

I’ve yet to meet anyone who hasn’t felt that the journey has been worth the time and effort. Even when the destination isn’t quite ideal, you learn so much along the way that it’s always worth it.

It strikes me that the main regrets people have are about opportunities they didn’t take and changes they didn’t make. Of course we make poor decisions from time to time, but there is always some good learning to take away from it. Allow this to happen without beating yourself up and you’ll soon be on the right road.

  1. It is difficult to go through life without having any regrets. But it is what you learn from the mistakes that counts. Mistakes are embarrassing when they happen, but years later you have a whole collection of them called experience.

    Dan O’Neil says… Thanks Sarika.

  2. I couldn’t agree with you more on this. There’s thousands of books and workshops with tons of information…but if you never DO it…you’ll never see the results.

Dan O’Neil says… Thanks Chelle – you can’t buy personal development, only information.

I know this isn´t the right post to ask it but I saw a comment of yours in another blog where you said you had implemented LinkyLove so you can take off nofollows from new comments instead of waiting for 3 comments.
Did you do that? How did you do? I need to do that in my blog and I don´t know how.
    Thanks in advance

Dan O’Neil says… I’m quite happy to answer your question here as I’m a big supporter of dofollow. I previously used the linkylove plugin however I like the idea that people can leave a meaningful comment and get a dofollow link. So I removed it. The LinkyLove plugin is great if you have loads and loads of spammy comments as it deters would be spammers because they have to visit and comment 3 times or more in order to receive dofollow links. There may come a time in the future when I implement it again.

If I understand your question correctly, what you are trying to do is use linkylove but have all comments dofollow. As far as I remember the minimum number of comments you can set the plug-in to is 3, so I don’t think it will achieve what you are trying to do.

I’ve added the address of your website here so that others can go along and visit… however as per my comment policy it’s not a link!

  4. I think you hit the nail on the head when you say stamina is a great thing. I feel if you have enough stamina or drive you can overcome any obstacle.

    Dan O’Neil says… That’s a great attitude to have!

  5. Failure to act is always one of the biggest failures. I’m not sure what contributes to it – fear of unknown or something else but without action – there are no benefits, no matter how much you read about it.

    Nicely written!
    Thanks you,
    Alex

  6. good read, i liked the tips. its crazy how every thing is always changing. we as humans must learn how to accept and adapt o_o

Dan O’Neil says… I agree with that! Once you can do it, it becomes second nature. Thanks Jason.

  7. Sometimes with personal development and self growth, life gets in the way. We get so busy and even though we want to change and grow, we have the desire and commitment, we need help. We need someone to help us, to motivate us. A sherpa, if you will. We have to climb the mountain and we need commitment, but its good to have someone who can help guide us.
    Thanks, Tom

    Tom’s last blog post..Seth Speaks

Dan O’Neil says… That’s so true – sometimes it can be 6 months or a year even and people realise that they’ve really not progressed towards their goals. Having someone to check in with and be there for you is a huge benefit to your life.

  8. bernad says:

Some people are afraid to change and grow. Sometimes, one thing that we need to do is to pay attention to the success peoples and figure it out what they do. Force yourself to dig on the information on what they’ve done.

Using Positive thinking is always helpful. Use Negative approach to force you to move, change and grow.

bernad’s last blog post..Why Use Vitalzym Enzyme Therapy For Fibromyalgia?

Dan O’Neil says… I agree Bernad. You can learn lots from successful people, their attitude and approach to life.

  9. we have the desire and commitment, we need help. We need someone to help us, to motivate us. A sherpa, if you will. We have to climb the mountain and we need commitment, but its good to have someone who can help guide us.

  10. Dan O'Neil says:

    Nice analogy, thanks.
