There’s a great comment appeared on this post – what kind of world do you choose to live in? where Terry from Scrub Tops (link credit where link credit is due!) talks about having an F5 key programmed into his brain. Whenever things get on top of him, or he gets weary of all the bad news he imagines himself hitting F5 (which is the refresh button on most browsers these days) and then it refreshes his mind.
I find this a really powerful idea and something that is adaptable to anyone. If you’re not used to using the F5 key on a computer, then pick something else that reminds you of being refreshed. Perhaps you could imagine your brain taking a shower, or give yourself an imaginary favourite drink. I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below.
So thanks Terry from Scrub Tops (if that’s indeed your real name!) and I hope, like me, that you will find this a useful tip whenever you need to think more positively.

/ July 13 2009Refreshing yourself is extremely important. There are big changes in your life that start with little thoughts. Too often people get caught up in their “ways” and don´t get creative with themselves and refresh. Downloading your book by the way looks intersting.

/ July 15 2009Doing the same thing again and again becomes very monotonousness. So it is really important to refresh yourself by taking part in other activating. Spending time in beauty of nature is the best thing anybody can do to refresh himself.

/ July 18 2009That is a good outlook on things. I guess you just have to train your mind that changing its perspective to something more positive is as easy as pushing a button, like the Easy button on the Staples advertisements.

/ July 21 2009The most refreshing expirience I have ever had when I was in the UK, in Scotland. I was climbing Ben Nevis, which has a number of streams running down it. The water from the streams is crystal clear and ice cool. Would love to have access to that water 24/7.

/ July 21 2009What a great idea – the F5 key. When I am struggling with what to do and when to do it I really just walk away from my computer and go and see my daughter (5 months old) and she cheers me up and clears my head. Luckily I work at home so it’s easy to do but anything to get away from the computer screen and regroup is something we all need to do from time to time.

/ August 2 2009It is a good thing to refresh ourselves especially when we have a lot of work or things to do that are very complicated. I usually drink plenty of water, go to places with good ambiance and relax myself. That refreshes my mind!

/ August 5 2009One thing that really helps is to get clean. Even if you feel exhausted, drag yourself out of bed, and just get into the shower. I say shower because often times a bath can get you feeling more and more lazy and that may lead to sucumbing to grogginess.

/ August 11 2009I can’t just hit “F5″. My main technique is getting out and going for a run, bike ride, walk, whatever. I like to empty my mind and if I’m stressing it’s tough to do.
I’m sure meditation may work, but I haven’t given it a shot yet.

/ August 12 2009In my world I call it taking a “pause” before reacting to whatever is happening in the present or perceived moment. Using a symbol for a perspective shift is helpful to a visual person. Auditory people usually need to say a word or clap there hands to shift. I’m very kinesthetic so I need to just shift my physical position to create that pause. I’m outta here! LOL

/ August 13 2009Refreshment is a very important part of our lives. There are a lot ideas written in books for refreshement, but actually the best idea lies within us. Because how a person gets refreshed varies from person to person, one may get refreshed by doing a painting where as another gets refreshed by listening to music, travelling etc. Once we refreshed then automatically fresh and innovative idea will flow, which is essential to grow. Fresh mind will give you fresh idea.

/ August 29 2009Hi! I certainly agree with you. We should refresh ourselves often. Refreshing ourselves is very important for all of us. We can get some better ideas, good thoughts, more energy and new ways to success by refreshing ourselves. It is very important because we feel monotonous when we do the same thing again and again. Thanks for sharing good ideas. Keep writing.

/ September 16 2009I trained myself sometime ago by imagining myself better, bigger and more successful than everyone around me. Then I linked those feelings of power to a simple squeezing of my thumb and index finger to refresh my thinking instantly without having to go through the ‘imagination’ ritual again. Try it, it works.

/ September 23 2009Refreshing the minds has become an integral strategy of any industry’s human resource program. Corporate giants soon or later realize their primary asset is their employees and bring such reform measures to cheer up them and revitalize their thought process (Yes! the good companies does this). When I finished reading this post an age old joke hit my mind directly about the man falling from building screaming F4 instead of “save”. Thus i too have refreshed my mind from my strenuous stretch of work..
Thanks to you and terry from scrub tops.

/ October 30 2009I love the F5 visual, especially in this day and age. I recently went to a yoga retreat for the weekend and it was a great way to refresh but after I was home for about a week, the affects began to wear off. Then it somehow got me thinking about the idea of projection and the emotions that we project being reflected back to us. It really is as simple as making a different choice about which emotion we choose to project. I made a list of all of the negative emotions I catch myself feeling and projecting throughout the day and then I made another list with an alternative choice to each emotion. Anger became patience. Worrying about money became trusting that there is plenty to go around. And I committed myself to practicing the new projections. It has been about ten days and I have noticed a huge difference in my outlook on life and my daily interactions with people. I work with kids and I think projection is a difficult concept to explain but they will definitely understand the concept of “hitting F5″. I am going to try it out when working with kids in challenging situations. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

/ November 8 2009I’ve never heard of this technique being described like an F5 key but I love it, it gives a great mental image! I think the ability to choose your thoughts is incredibly important, and simply being able to recognise when you’re having negative thoughts is a huge first step.
I’ve learned a lot from the book ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle – if you haven’t seen it before I’d highly recommend it.

/ December 8 2009I find that to really get a refresh, one needs to take a short trip. I prefer to get away to some nice weather and positive thinking friends. Try to get away from work and leave the laptop or Blackberry behind.
There is so much negativity and problems – just look around. Also be very aware of your immediate circle and if any want you to join their “pity party.” It is tough to get a refresh when some of your friends or family are dragging you into their pit.
