Mumpreneurs: Reclaim Balance in Your Life

There is a growing sector of women in our society who have broken free from the stereo-typical ‘stay-at-home mum’. These women raise their children, look after the house (and often their partner!) AND have a successful career or run a business, often from their own home.

As a busy Mum, Life Coach and Trainer from an office in our home, I fit snugly into this category and, as I coach many women who are also in this position, I understand the importance of maintaining balance in one’s life.

All too often, women can feel that they are one-step away from being a ‘Super Mum’ – they can’t let anyone down, whether it’s their family, friends, partner, career or business and this can leave them feeling unappreciated and unsupported.

It’s so amazing to be in a position where you can have the best of all worlds, but if you are feeling like you are trying to do or be too much, here are some tips that I’ve learned along the way:

  • Work your career or business when your children are at school, nursery or being looked after by someone else – if money is tight, ask a friend or relative for help and set times for your career or business around this. You may also find women in a similar position to yourself in your area who you can help each other out with child care. If your kids have a nap during the day, or when they are asleep at night, this is a great time to work.
  • Get your kids involved with the housework. Even from a young age, children are interested in what we do and their play reflects our household jobs. You can ask them to dust, sweep, wipe, bake, or stir while you get on with it, too. This is great time together, makes the jobs more fun and you can sing songs and rhymes with little ones while you do it. For older children, they enjoy the responsibility of tidying and cleaning their own space and if you start while they’re young, they’ll get into great habits.
  • Be time efficient – use what time you have for the important things and prioritise every task. I find it useful to write a list before I set to work. Take each task and put a star by the most important ones, then prioritise them again by numbering the order you will do them. If you get them all done in the time you have, do the same with the tasks you didn’t star. Also, when prioritising your starred tasks, do the ones you dislike doing first. This gets them out of the way and you’ll feel much better once they’re done.
  • Make sure you get time with your partner. Whether it’s a night out or a cosy night in, it’s really important to your relationship to have together time. Make sure you add this into your schedule each week.
  • Get your ‘you-time’. This is probably the most important thing to remember. It’s like in the aeroplane -  you put on your oxygen mask before your child’s  – you have to look after yourself in order to look after them. If you’re not a relaxed, well-rested and happy person, this will reveal itself in your day-to-day life. So take guilt-free you-time, whether it’s a night out with friends, a long bath, a spa day, shopping, or a film and chocolates, time out will give you a huge boost in your home and work life.

So don’t try to be a Super Mum – it is possible to get balance as a Mumpreneur and if you need help with that, a Life Coach is only a click or phone call away!

Your circumstances are your blessing or your curse

The people I encounter in my coaching work never cease to amaze and astound me. The most common theme amongst people who make something of their lives (by their own definition of course) is that they always use their circumstances to their advantage. Be it ill-health, lack of money, lack of education or skill, whatever their circumstances they do what they want to do anyway; nothing stands in their way.

I’ve certainly met plenty of people who are the opposite – in my network marketing days I encountered so many people for whom their circumstances were the reason they chose not to succeed. Ultimately it all boils down to one thing… EXCUSES!

Life is littered with examples of people who have made fortunes and built incredible companies, organisations and charities in spite of their circumstances and upbringing. To them, it is just a part of life, something to be celebrated and used to motivate them towards their own greatness.

Today, I’d like to ask you which of your circumstances is your excuse for not moving toward your goals and dreams? Ultimately it doesn’t matter what your excuse is – it will prevent you from achieving what you set out to do.

Start by celebrating your circumstances – after all you would not be you today without them!

Knowing What You Want – Create Your Life’s Shopping List

To me the secret to living a wonderful life, filled with joyous experience and happiness, lies in knowing what you want. For some people this is extremely challenging and just to contemplate it causes them a headache. I’m pretty sure that this is normal.

The easiest way to tackle this is to begin to practice. Start simple with a small scrap of paper with 3 or 4 things on it that you want. It doesn’t have to be major things, anything will do. The most important thing is to have a list! Now the first thing that can happen here is that as you sit down to write your list your mind delivers a stream of useless advice – such as, “You don’t really want that”, “What do you want that for?” or “Don’t be stupid!” Most people crumple under the pressure and don’t bother. Here’s that old saying – “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”

So, make a decision that inspite of the negative doubts and self-critical thoughts, you are going to compile this list; even if they do seem silly or you feel stupid doing it.

Done that? Really? Do it now.

Ok, so now you have your list of things – we’re going to call this Life’s Shopping List. First things first, these are going to be things that you want and most of the time (but not always) they involve some kind of financial commitment. Make a promise to yourself that you are going to use money you have earned and not money you have borrowed from a bank, credit card or from money you would use to pay your bills. If this is not possible for you then get some financial help and sort out your money first.

Now, select one of these things as a goal – it’s best if it’s likely to take you about 2 or 3 months to complete or save for. Next – set a plan. Are there things you need to do in order to make it happen? List them down. How much money do you have to put aside in order to make it happen? Where are you going to save the money?

Lastly – the fun part! Working towards your goal and then the celebration. Find someone to be accountable to, if it helps you. Your family or friends are usually the best people to start with; or of course you can hire a Life Coach. You can do simple things like stick a photo of your goal on the fridge to keep you motivated towards it.

If you need to, you can review the goal as you are working towards it and if necessary adjust the timings accordingly. If you’ve selected something simple as your first goal, then hopefully this will not be necessary and you’ll soon be celebrating your achievement.

Once you’ve done it once, it’s a simple matter of rinse and repeat. You certainly don’t have to restrict yourself to one goal at a time – it’s likely that you’ll have many on the go at once, some short-term, some longer-term plans. A great idea is to get yourself a dream book and begin to fill it with things that you’d like to be, do or have. Some categories to help you think: Home, Physical, Service, Family, Spiritual, Relationships, Work, Money, Personal.

I like to have one goal per page of my book and then I can make notes and stick in photos and other things as I’m moving towards them. It’s wonderful to sit every day for a few minutes and review your achievements and progress and maybe add a few more things that you’d like.

For those of you for whom thinking of things that you want is difficult, as you practice you’ll find it gets easier as you start to achieve little things.

Do You Have To Work Hard To Get Anywhere In Life?

For most of my life I have tried to do less and achieve more. For the most part this has been in vain! However it has always been in my mind that the belief, “you have to work hard to get anywhere in life”, really doesn’t fit for me. I appreciate that the people who might be considered successful actually seem to work hard, however there is much more to the story than simply putting in the hours and watching the success and money roll in.

You have to do something that you love. Something that you love to do is never a chore; it never seems like hard work and it always leaves you feeling energised. The belief that you have to work hard to get anywhere in life, on the surface seems true. All the evidence of successful people points to working hard, for long hours and normally struggling to make ends meet in the beginning.

However, if it is something you love to do, it will never feel like hard work, the hours will never seem long and the struggle is all part of the fun of the journey. So many people have said that the joy is in the journey, not the destination. Of course, without a destination there can be no journey.

The bottom line is that you are the one who says what is hard work for you. If you feel as though you are working hard and struggling all the time with it, the chances are that you do not love what you do and there may be a better choice for you. Now before you go and quit your job and live out your lifelong dream… get some help and support – friends, family, maybe even a coach (of course I’d love to help you!) and make sensible plans to create the changes you wish to see.

If you already do what you love to do, then I expect you feel the way that I do, that work doesn’t feel like work! If not, find what you love to do and join the rising number of people who are creating their life purpose on their own terms.

Visualisation – Think It, Feel It, Be It

One of the most important components of dreams, goals and the Law of Attraction is visualisation. Most people understand the basic concept of picturing that which they want in their mind. It is not a new concept, but it has certainly reached more people since the release of the film The Secret. It’s well discussed there and in numerous other books, articles, dvds etc. More information and resources can be found by clicking this link to Amazon – The Secret at Amazon

The thing to remember is that in order to take this tool to its fullest potential in your life, you need to create not only images in your mind. The extra ingredients of feelings, emotions, sounds and any other senses you can include, creates a more powerful visualisation and with it a more powerful link between you and that which you want. The more real the reality in your head, the more real the reality in your life will become.

This is not a tool simply to create money or objects in your life, you can use this to define who you are. For instance, if you lack confidence, then visualising yourself as confident, picturing what you are doing, how you look, how you sound, how you feel and as much detail as possible, is a fantastic way to increase your confidence. Spend time every day thinking about this and including these extra details into your mental images. In fact for some people, they find mental images challenging, but can easily create a sense or a feeling in their minds – for these people, work on your mental images. It is important to practice and above all, have fun with this. Once you believe it in your mind, you can see, feel, hear, smell and even taste it, you will know deep down that this will be your reality. You are on the road to success in whatever you want – enjoy the journey!
